Overview
Late Shri Virendra K. Bafna was far more than just the founder of TCR Engineering Services; he was a true pioneer, a visionary, and the foundational guiding force in the fields of materials science, asset integrity, and non-destructive testing.
In 1973, he established TCR Engineering Services and led the organisation with an unwavering commitment to excellence for four decades, transforming it into a reference point for independent materials testing in India. Driven by an indomitable entrepreneurial spirit and a profound passion for innovation, he successfully built a globally recognised institution whose signature clients could trust without qualification. He was, and remains, the true heart and soul of the company.
Background and experience
His remarkable journey began with a brilliant academic foundation in India, where he graduated as a gold medallist from the University of Indore. Eager to expand his horizons and deepen his technical acumen, his thirst for knowledge took him across the globe to pursue advanced international training.
He earned two distinguished postgraduate degrees: a Master’s degree in Engineering from the prestigious University of Toronto in Canada, and a Master’s degree in Industrial Management from the Clarkson College of Technology in New York. Armed with this world-class education, he chose to return home to India, bringing back sophisticated training and global perspectives to revolutionise the domestic materials testing landscape.
With over 35 years of hands-on technical and managerial experience, Mr. Bafna fundamentally redefined industry standards through groundbreaking advancements in materials characterisation. He performed pioneering work in X-ray fluorescence (XRF)-based Positive Material Identification (PMI), effectively setting the definitive Indian benchmark for precision and reliability in the method. Furthermore, his seminal contributions to corrosion studies, advanced chemical analysis, mechanical testing, and failure investigations built the unshakeable institutional foundation on which the entire TCR group stands today.
Under his strategic stewardship, TCR Engineering drastically expanded its geographic and industrial footprint. He successfully guided the company’s growth across India and orchestrated its strategic expansion into the Middle East through the creation of TCR Arabia. Today, TCR Arabia stands as a premier center of excellence in the region, serving major global industries and carrying forward his blueprint for cross-border technical growth. His foresight ensured that the company evolved in tandem with global industrial demands, bridging the gap between sophisticated laboratory science and heavy industrial application.
Beyond his executive and technical responsibilities, Mr. Bafna was a deeply respected thought leader and an active member of elite global scientific organisations. He contributed his vast expertise to the progress of institutions such as ASTM International, ASM International, NACE (now AMPP), the Indian Institute of Metals, and the Non-Destructive Testing Society of India. His invaluable contributions to national progress were recognised at the highest echelons of science, highlighted by a prestigious appreciation award from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for TCR’s pivotal role in Project ASLV (Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle), a major milestone that cemented his impact on India's aerospace and defence advancements.
Though Mr. Bafna passed away in 2013, his extraordinary legacy continues to inspire generations of engineers, scientists, and industry professionals. The core principles he established—absolute independence, uncompromising technical rigour, and an ironclad refusal to ever dilute the signature on a report—remain the active, daily operating values embedded in the DNA of the company. Every milestone and achievement realized by TCR Engineering today stands as a direct tribute to his pioneering spirit, ensuring that while his earthly journey has ended, his vision remains permanently etched into the very fabric of the global industry he helped build.
